Cognitive Space
- a social constructionist look at Sino-Western Cooperations
Peter Peverelli
Henk van Dongen and his team initiated Social Integration (SI) Theory
in Rotterdam during the early 1980s. The model is based on Karl
Weick’s organization theory as laid down in his seminal ‘The Social
Psychology of Organizing (Weick, 1979), enriched with aspects from
postmodern thinkers like Michel Foucault (the embeddedness of
reality in social relations) and Jacques Derrida (deconstruction
analysis).
Key innovative concepts of SI theory include: social-cognitive
configuration, the tertaility of social relations and multiple inclusion.
Peter Peverelli further works out this model by adding the notion of
cognitive space, which is based on the concept of mental space in the
psycholinguistic theory of Gilles Fauconnier. Peverelli’s contribution
renders the SI model better applicable on the meso- and macrolevels.
